For those of you that are not familiar with Scrambled Eggs at Midnight, it is a 272 page novel written by the authors Brad Barkley and Heather Hepler. The book was originally published on May 4, 2006 by the renown publisher Dutton Juvenile. The work is fictional, and describes the life of a teenage girl named Calliope, who lives with her free spirit artist parents. At one point the artistically inclined mother decides to uproot Calliope, and travel the country while selling handmade jewelry at various Renaissance fairs. Calliope is not particularly happy about this life style change, and craves to be back home with her father, and immersed back within the standard constructs of a regular or normal type of life. However eventually Calliope meets up with a same age teen named Elliot while in Asheville, North Carolina, and they fall in love with each other. The story then followers their funny adventures and story as it unfolds.
Due to the fact that this novel relates by name to the core theme of our website, I thought it would be fun to write up my own personal review of the book, especially considering so many of our web guests and visitors are searching for information on it. To cut right to it, the first thought that crossed my mind when I finished reading the work, was that it is an excellent piece of American literature. Although the book's target audience is young adults and teenagers, it's highly readable for even an old timer such as myself. The story line is somewhat fast, and always keeps you wanting more. As I followed the character development and hilarious twists and turns that Calliope and Elliot go through, I couldn't help but feel touched and moved by the shear gravity of their characters. In fact I found myself in tears on several occasions, while bearing in mind that I usually hold my composure during even the saddest literary works.
With regard to the intriguing storyline itself, I won't even touch that, as I don't want to ruin the experience for those of you who plan to purchase the book. I can't stand it when online reviews layout half of the plot in their review, which obviously spoils the experience for anyone reading it. All I will say is that the writing quality is superior, and the dynamics of the story and character are very well constructed and realistic. I'm sure you will find many of the elements laid out in the book to parallel your own experiences growing up and falling in love, and will conclude yourselves that the book is very personally connecting. If you really like small town homegrown characters set in real life, then you will love this romance novel. I will say no more about the story itself or the fascinating characters it contains, as I'm close to blurting out some of the books highlights, and don't want to ruin it for new readers.
With regard to where you can purchase this book, it should be noted that you can purchase it online at many internet based bookstores. The first and easiest place to buy it would probably be at Amazon, where it sells in both the hardcover and paperback forms. Amazon will also allow you to buy the book used, if you don't mind it being slightly worn. Although the book is very accessible in English, it will prove difficult to find in other languages, as well as at international bookstores. If you are located outside of the US, then you will need to find a bookstore that ships to your physical location, something Amazon may or may not be able to accomplish. I hope that you all enjoyed this quick and brief book review.
